Until help arrives

It is very important to know what actions to take yourself when catastrophe strikes and you're waiting on your area's SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro crew. In some scenarios, taking action and doing what you can do is the difference between the problem being easily managed and it getting worse. I'm going to list a couple "do's and don't's" when it comes to fire and smoke damage.

One thing that anyone can do in the instance of fire or smoke damage is to limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet. Another thing you can do is to tape a double layer of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

One thing not to do is to attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water. Another big thing to keep in mind is to not consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat or water.

Deodorizations

10/15/2021 (Permalink)

Is there a lingering musty or unpleasant smell in your home or building? Sometimes, it could be hard to pinpoint where exactly it is coming from.

As experts in deodorization, our technicians will identify the source of the odor and completely remove it. We do not just mask the odor and we do not take any shortcuts. The crew will clean off residues and use sprays or foggers to deodorize various surfaces. They are trained to use different equipment and techniques to tackle different situations (ex. air scrubbers, ventilation box fans, ozone generator, photocatalytic oxidizer, etc.)

At the end of the process the technicians will advise you if there is a need to get your carpets professionally cleaned or if you should invest in HVAC filters or an air purifier system.

SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro has the experience and training needed to get rid of any lingering smells. Call us today- (513) 422-9200

Damage from a storm

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

What Can You Do To Protect Your Home From Storm Damage?

There are a few things within your control that you can do to your property to help prevent avoidable damage in the event of a predicted storm:

  • Ensure movable objects such as garden furniture, bins and ornaments are safely stored away or secure where they are placed.
  • Ensure your drains or gutters are clear of debris to prevent blockages.
  • Repair or replace any slipped or cracked roof tiles and secure tv aerials. Get advice from your insurance provider regarding temporary repairs and seek professional help for this type of work.
  • Try to keep your car sheltered away from trees or other large, and potentially hazardous objects, ideally in a garage.
  • Secure loose fences.
  • Place valuables and electrical items in high cupboards or on higher floors to prevent damage.
  • Store important documents in a watertight bag in a dry, accessible place.
  • Make a list of useful numbers you may need, such as your insurer, the council and emergency services.
  • Make sure you're indoors when the storm hits and don’t try to repair any storm damage during the bad weather

Knowing your policy

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

Most commercial properties have a high insurance policy and coverage rate. Does your office have a plan of action in place that can answer all of the questions that your restoration company may ask?

Commercial property policies protect business properties and their contents against loss, like fire, theft, or other physical destruction. These policies may also cover loss of income or an increase in business expenses that result from any of the resulting property damage.

Know if your business has a deductible? Confirm that your insurance company has all vendor information that they may need in order to file a claim.

SERVPRO will work with your insurance adjuster, field rep, and companies site manager that is involved in the claim. We will provide all documentations, photos, forms, labor hours, and estimate to the claim handler.

It is important to know what your insurance will cover vs what it does not cover and if you have multiple insurance polices for different things.

Basement flooding

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

Is your basement flooded?

Cant get someone out today?

Here is what you can do to minimize the damage..

  • Early cleanup after your basement floods is not only efficient but also important from a health standpoint. After you are certain the cause of the flood has been repaired you can start the cleanup.
  • Before you begin anything, be sure the situation is safe! With flooded basements sometimes comes sewage leaks, structural damage, or electrical hazards.
  • If you have a flood contained in a small area, you can use a wet/dry vacuum to remove the water.
  • Larger floods require the use of your sump pump. Connect a garden hose to the pump with the opposite end running away from your house and preferably into a storm drain. DO NOT remove all the water at one time. Remove about 1/3 of the water at the time, marking the level each time to confirm the leak has been cared for properly.

Why not remove all the water at once?

  • If the flooding in your basement is caused by heavy rain or snow fall, the water pressure in the ground is likely high. The water in your house may be stabilizing your foundation. Removing it all at once can lead to cracks in the foundation.

If you or someone you know has experienced basement flooding, do not wait!

Give us a call today!

Protect your business from a storm

10/8/2021 (Permalink)

Have you taken steps to protect your business and employees?

When we experience a thunderstorm they can potentially cause extensive damage to your business. Power outages downed tree limbs, and flooding from rainstorms are all possibilities. SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro has a few preventative steps you can take to ensure you are able to protect your business when these storms happen.

1. Keep Your Lightning Rod Maintained

A lighting rod is a metal rod mounted on a structure and intended to protect the structure from a lightning strike. If lightning hits the structure, it will preferentially strike the rod and be conducted to ground through a wire, instead of passing through the structure, where it could start a fire or cause electrocution. If your business is located in a tall building that may attract lightning, then maintaining the lightning rod can be essential. Have the rod checked annually for damage and ask your certification professionals to verify that it is up to code. If your business is located in an area where lightning is common, it is wise to have the unit cleaned and inspected at least twice a year.

 2. Maintain All Trees on the Property  High winds can turn tree limbs into projectiles that may shatter your building’s windows and cause serious injury to your customers or employees. Make sure you are maintaining your landscaping so dead branches do not detach and strike people entering your business below. Trimming trees away from your building’s power lines can protect its power source during a thunderstorm

3. Have a Flood Plan in Place  Having a flood plan in place can possibly prevent flooding in your business, especially in the case of mitigation services. Contacting SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro before the wet season can be a wise choice because if your building should experience flooding, our team can have help on hand right away.

Water you can’t see

10/6/2021 (Permalink)

Water is the single most amazing substance on the planet.  Over 70% of the planet’s surface is covered by water. Our bodies are made up of over 60% water. Life as we know it is not sustainable without water. If you’re in the water damage restoration business what may amaze you the most is water’s incredible ability to travel. Water has an uncanny ability to travel around, over, and through about anything. For this fact, we at SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro often talk about the water you don’t see. Hidden moisture in your property can cause serious damage to your home or business and even your health. That is why even perceived “small” water damages should be handled by professionals.

To protect your investment you really need to view every water intrusion as a real threat.  SERVPRO has the experience, training, and the tools to properly scope water damaged property. Today we want to focus on the basic tools we use track the moisture.

  •         Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture. They can detect moisture in drywall, carpets, moldings, and other building materials. This tool is used to map out the full extent of the affected areas. What may appear dry or be dry to the touch may be affected and this tool helps us find all the moisture.
  •         Moisture Meters are used to actually measure the amount of moisture in the materials. This is a vital part in determining a drying strategy. Moisture meters are used throughout the drying process as areas are monitored daily to document the progress in drying.
  •         Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. SERVPRO techs use this information to create an environment in which materials can dry. As with the meters, this tool is used throughout the project to measure and document the progress of drying.

Water damage

10/6/2021 (Permalink)

he source of the water informs the entire cleaning process, so identifying where it came from is typically the first objective. Water from a sewer backup requires a more intense cleaning process because it is likely contaminated with various substances that you don't want to remain in your home:

  • Bacteria or other microbes
  • Feces
  • Harsh chemicals

Remove Water and Materials
Before they can disinfect the area, technicians must remove the excess water and any materials that it has destroyed. This may include tiles, drywall or any other porous materials that cannot be salvaged. It's important to tear out damaged materials so that secondary problems such as further saturation or mold growth don't set in and spread.

Disinfect Affected Spaces
A key step in sewer cleanup is making sure the bacteria from the backup are eradicated. Specialists use strong cleaners to get rid of any microorganisms that remain. To get the cleaning solution into some of the smaller cracks and crevices, they may need to use special equipment. After a thorough cleaning, the specialists test the area to ensure that the microbes are gone.

Restore the Room
The whole area around the flooded toilet must be cleaned and dried, but the remediation process isn't complete until everything is back in place. New walls and flooring that match the existing patterns are installed. The issue that caused the toilet to back up in the first place must be resolved so that there are no more issues.
The sewer cleanup process is pretty straightforward, but it's important that no step is skipped. Experienced specialists complete the process as efficiently as possible.

Content cleaning

10/6/2021 (Permalink)

When you go through something devastating, such as a home fire, there are many emotions that you generally process. We strive to make that process a bit easier with the mentality in place that we will work to restore all that we can instead of having to completely replace all of it.  We know there are some things that cannot be replaced such as family heirlooms and those special sentimental pieces.

Our fire team will go in and help you make a list of the contents of the home and make a report of items in your home; they take a room by room inventory, including pictures, to help better understand what can be restored and this can also be beneficial in most insurance claims.

Once we have the list, the team can pack up the items that are to be restored and move it all back to the warehouse where the items are then cleaned to the condition it was before the fire using a few different types of cleaning methods, determined by the item itself. Not all things are made the same and some things require special care and attention than others during the cleaning process.

When the items have been cleaned, they are boxed up and can be stored in our dry, temperature-regulated warehouse until the customer is ready to have the items moved to their home.

Renters insurance

10/4/2021 (Permalink)

It is true that renters insurance is like a lot of things in life: it can seem over-complicated at first, but with a little explanation it becomes more understandable. If you rent a property, obtaining insurance is a good idea whether you own a lot of valuable items or even if you do not. That's because insurance has the ability to cover you for damage caused by a fire that affects other people and their belongings. As with all types of insurance, each policy may have unique features and it is important to understand what is covered and what might be excluded.

What Is Typically Covered

In general, the primary purpose of renters insurance is to cover your contents in the case of a residential fire or other disaster. Your clothes, furniture, jewelry, paintings and books could all be rendered useless by fire damage, and insurance is designed to cover those losses. A policy that includes replacement costs will provide bigger compensation for losses, but it may also include a higher premium than a cash value policy. Other types of coverage could include the following:

  • Liability coverage in case you negligently cause a fire
  • Medical payment coverage to others (though this is usually limited)
  • Loss of Use coverage in case you need a place to stay while the apartment is being fixed
  • Fire restoration coverage by a qualified fire mitigation company

For the best insurance, it pays to check around. Get the coverage that is suited to your needs and fits your budget.

What Might Not Be Covered
In general, a fire is a fire, and with renters insurance you should be protected. If you own an item that has a high value, such as an expensive bicycle, you could need to specifically insure that item. It always is a good idea to talk at least once a year to your insurance agent to make sure your insurance is not out of date due to changes in your lifestyle.

Soot damage

10/4/2021 (Permalink)

The longer you allow smoke and odors to linger, the deeper they soak into walls, furniture, and carpets. You should ventilate your house as quickly as possible and turn off your heating and air and replace the air filters. Additionally, your HVAC system could make the problem worse by spreading smoke, soot, and ashes throughout your home. Heavily damaged items may need to be disposed of. Consider throwing away food items that weren't sealed in airtight containers that came in contact with smoke damage.

Don't let a fire ruin your life. The devastation can be disheartening. React quickly, the faster you start the smoke cleaning process, the less extensive the damage will be. Call SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro if you experience any damages or if you just have a question.

Types of smoke

9/22/2021 (Permalink)

In the restoration business, SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro gets called to building fires on a regular basis. Did you know that smoke damage is treated differently? There are 4 main types that we treat:

  • Wet Smoke. (Plastic and Rubber) Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, and smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry Smoke. (Paper and Wood) Fast-burning, high temperatures; heat rises; therefore, smoke rises.
  • Protein Fire Residue. (Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire) Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
  • Fuel Oil Soot. (Furnace puff backs) While “puff backs” can create havoc for homeowners, SERVPRO of Annapolis/Severna Park can, in most cases, restore the contents and structure quickly.
  • Other Types. (Tear gas, fingerprint powder, and fire extinguisher residue) Special loss situations require special care.

SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro technicians are IICRC trained to handle even the toughest of losses. The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process, but trust professionals to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Water damage

4/14/2021 (Permalink)

If your home suffers water damage as a result of water leaks or flooding, there are specific measures you have to consider. That is when you need water cleanup and removal specialists to dry your property and mitigate the damage. Below, we are going to take you through some of the techniques that these professionals employ to restore your property.

When you are working with a locally owned company like SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro to solve water damage problems, technicians start by tracing the wet areas and their respective moisture levels. Thermo-hygrometers, moisture meters, and moisture sensors are some of the tools that our professionals use to examine the level of moisture in contents. After that, drying the materials to their standard moisture levels follows.

Water extraction is vital during the restoration process. Extractors and pumps are some of the tools that our SERVPRO technicians use to remove the water. Extractors can either be portable or truck mounted, and they all have three key components: vacuum, pump, and the heater systems. The vacuum component is very crucial during water extraction, but when cleaning upholstery and carpets, all the three work together.

When performing moisture extraction in areas with limited access, portable extractors are preferred. The work of truck mounted extractors is similar to that of the portable ones, with the significant difference being that they come with their powering sources and are more powerful. Additionally, truck mounts can efficiently perform restorative cleaning and water removal.

Our SERVPRO technicians may also use pumps to remove the accumulated water when attending to a water damage incident. However, we do not use the pumps when the debris is present. The team uses submersible pumps when the depth of the standing water is more than two inches. It is important to note that certified service providers follow the IICRC standards in the restoration work.

So give us a call! We are faster to any disaster and are here to help get you back to "Like it never even happened."

Flooded house

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

One of the most common type of interior damage that homeowners experience is water damage. While many other types of damage can have a significant effect on the home; there are typically no other types of losses that can cause as much damage as water.

A key to water damage is to have a SERVPRO water restoration expert form a thorough inspection to ensure that all the lines of the water migration lines have been properly documented. If the water migration is not properly documented there is an increased likelihood of other water related damages becoming present.

If you do not properly address water damage within your home, you are making yourself more susceptible to microbial growth. As microbial growth begins to set in within your home, the mitigation process becomes significantly more costly.

By acting quickly to the first signs of water damage you will be much more prepared for a timely response.

Storm damage

12/18/2020 (Permalink)

Windstorms can cause damage to your home.  The storms can last for a few minutes or they may last for a few hours and even several days when they come from large weather systems.  Wind speeds during a windstorm typically exceed 35 miles per hour. When cold fronts pass over mountains, cold air accelerates even more as it moves downslope.  Blizzards can occur when the windstorms pass over snow covered ground.

The causes of longer periods of windstorms are large differences in atmospheric pressure across a region and the jet stream winds overhead.  Windstorms can also create dust storms and sandstorms in dry areas. Tornadoes and cyclones also produce wind damage however they are usually classified separately because the wind speeds are much higher.

The most common damage caused by windstorms are:

  •         Roof damage
  •         Fallen trees
  •         Down power lines

It is important to keep your insurance up to date, just in case you need to make a claim, be sure to take photos of the damage that the windstorm causes to your home.  It may or may not be covered.  Insurance does not cover gradual damage, so it is important to upkeep your property.  After a windstorm it is suggested to check the roof for loose shingles or spots of missing asphalt as the wind tends to cause damage to the edges of the roof first, causing a chain reaction.  If the roof is old or you suspect it’s got issues you should have it checked as it could cause the roof to leak or rot due to water exposure.

Insurance coverage

12/11/2020 (Permalink)

When examining your home insurance policy, it is essential to note the difference between water and flood damage. Water damage is generally covered by your homeowners’ insurance policy and protects you in situations like a leak or burst pipe. Flood damage is defined as a general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of two or more acres and two or more properties of normally dry land. With flood damage, the water comes from a natural source, and two or more properties are involved.

Home insurance companies do not offer flood insurance, and policies must be obtained through the National Flood Insurance Program. This means that homeowners who are unprotected and experience flood damage have to pay for water damage restoration out of pocket, which can mean thousands of dollars in expenses.

Water damage mitigation does not have to be a painful process! Check your policy and ensure that you are protected in the event of a disaster. Call SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro for your water or flood damage needs at 513-422-9200. We talk to your insurance company for you and make sure you are informed every step of the way.

Fire pit safety tips

10/26/2020 (Permalink)

Backyard Fire Pit Safety Tips:

  • Whether you prefer a built-in or portable fire pit, choose one that is not too large for the area. The pit should be a minimum of 10 feet away from any structures or combustible materials as well as away from trees, fences, sheds, power lines, and telephone wires.
  • Make sure that the seating area is large enough and properly placed for comfort and ventilation.
  • Check wind direction before lighting a fire.
  • Don’t use flammable fluids (gasoline, lighter fluid, etc.) to light or relight fires.
  • To start the fire, use a lighter to ignite crumpled pieces of paper covered with small sticks. Then, add larger sticks and a log or two to keep it burning.
  • Burn only dry material. Damp material will create excess smoke.
  • Don’t wear flammable clothing (like nylon) or any loose-fitting clothing.
  • Never leave the fire unattended, and keep pets and children far away from the fire as they will be attracted to it.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher, garden hose, or bucket of water nearby.
  • As the fire dies down, use a shovel and spread out the ashes to allow them to cool down. Then slowly pour water over those ashes and watch them closely to be sure that no burning embers remain or reignite. Put the cooled ashes in a specially designated ash storage metal can.

DIY and restoration

10/16/2020 (Permalink)

DIY projects can be fun. But sometimes the option to save a dollar & “do it yourself” can be a big mistake when it comes to water, fire & mold restoration, and you may dig yourself a deeper hole & cost yourself a lot of money in the long run. On television and social media, DIY projects look so easy. And they are, if you’re an expert. However, DIY projects can mean a loss of money and time. The worst is a trip to the hospital. For the most part, people are entirely unrealistic when it comes to all aspects of DIY. A major kitchen restoration job cannot be completed in a weekend or two. Water or fire restoration is not something that can be put off just for weekend work. It needs to be handled fast and correctly the first time. The longer water sits in your home the more damage is being done. That’s why it's always right to call the professionals at SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro to handle your problem. Our technicians can arrive in less than 2 hours to assess the damage and start the drying process immediately.

Commercial water damage

10/12/2020 (Permalink)

A sprinkler system in your office building helps reduce the severity of a fire while remaining cost-effective. However, your office building in Teaneck might suffer problems if a fitting, joint, or sprinkler head suffers damage. This can happen in different situations and circumstances. Excessive water does not always spill out from a sprinkler head itself.

When a situation develops involving faulty installation or corrosion of sprinkler systems, broken feed lines, or even vandalism in your building, commercial water damage company can help make things normal again. Even if the water seems minimal, when it covers a large area,  they can help get things dried out quickly. We have the equipment needed to perform large-scale operations when needed and can tailor our services to smaller jobs, as well.

Large areas that sustain intrusive water need help drying out. Evaporating water simply moves from one area to another. Several fans might dry an area, only to find that condensation and water accumulation occurs elsewhere in your building. SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro is to make it “Like it never even happened,” for you. When we arrive, we start setting up the desiccant machines, air scrubbers, air movers, and extraction equipment we need to get your property dry again efficiently.

With a rapid response, we can keep the risk of water and mold damage minimized by removing moisture before it can soak into materials. Extracting moisture that may already seeped into carpets, office dividers, furniture, and other furnishings happens quickly when we use air blowers and dehumidifiers. Desiccant machines also help immensely in removing water vapor from the air. Once we remove it, this moisture can no longer find its way back into your office's environment and cause problems.

Mold in your commercial business

10/12/2020 (Permalink)

So what is mold?

Mold is a fungus that reproduces tiny spores in an environment with a lot of moisture. Mold grows quickly when humidity levels in an area are above 40 percent! Microbial growth can grow in or on just about anywhere such as window seals, drywall, carpet, ceilings, furniture, and even animals. Mold spores are microscopic and can move through the air and have growth within 48 hours. Mold can also come in a variety of colors, like green, brown, black and even purple! Mold can also leave a strong stench or bad odor.

What do you do next?

Inspect your building. Check for any leaks or water damage in our around floors, roofs, ceilings, crawlspace, kitchens, bathrooms, water heater or supply rooms. If you have found the source- then contact your local plumber to address the problem. If left untreated, mold will return. Once the leak or problem has been repaired, then contact the professionals at SERVPRO!

SERVPRO of is the trusted leader in Mold Remediation. We are no stranger to high humidity percentages. During the summer months, daily readings average around 89-92 percent. Even in February and March, daily readings average 85-86 percent. Our technicians are IICRC trained and certified for water restoration, fire restoration and mold remediation.

Flood damage

10/12/2020 (Permalink)

What Are Examples of Secondary Damage or Discovered Hazards?

When structural components break, erode, or strip away protective coverings during the rush of water or attempts to restore the chaos, the process might need to come to a halt. If the following materials are discovered a change in the recovery plan is necessary:

  • Asbestos
  • Lead painted surfaces
  • A wide range of chemicals, stored or swept inside, now contaminating the flood water
  • Mold growth

Tips for a sewer damage

10/12/2020 (Permalink)

Tips For Dealing With A Sewer Backup In Your Home

In the best scenario, the plumbing system in your home works flawlessly. The water you need to operate appliances and to use for drinking and cleaning comes to you through the pipes. When the water is used, it is then whisked away through another set of pipes and goes to a wastewater treatment plant or a septic system. As with everything made by man, though, things go wrong, and you may be confronted with a sewer cleanup. Cleaning contaminated water requires special care, knowledge, experience and equipment. The best course of action is to call a Water mitigation team to take care of the problem quickly and safely. Here are some tips for dealing with a sewer backup in your home.

Yes, This Is an Emergency

Sewage water could contain viruses, bacteria and microbes that pose a danger to human health. Therefore, the mess should be cleaned up by professionals with specialized equipment for sewer cleanup. Look for a company that meets the following criteria:

  • They are available 24/7
  • They can be quick to the scene
  • They have experience in treating raw sewage from a flooded toilet
  • They work in protective gear when dealing with contaminated water

Your job in this situation is to call in the professionals and to keep everyone in your home safe. That means keeping children away from the dirty water, and to make sure pets don't go near it as well.

Mold after a storm damage

10/10/2020 (Permalink)

If you have mold on the walls in your home then it's usually easy to remove. If the wall is non-porous then you can simply wipe the mold away using a wet cloth. You can also use a mold killing product if you like.

However, if the wall is porous, such as unpainted drywall, then you will usually need to cut away the wall where the mold is growing. This is because mold grows inside the material, instead of just on the surface, and so you can't remove it completely.

Mold on Drywall Walls

Because drywall is a substance high in cellulose, it is one of the most common materials mold grows on in the home. As there is no practical way to completely remove mold from drywall, you will have to cut out and dispose of any drywall you discover which has mold growing on it.

Mold Growing Behind Walls

Mold commonly grows out of sight behind walls in the wall cavities. These spaces often contain pockets of humid, moist air. Mold can also grow hidden behind wallpaper. Wallpaper glue can hold organic debris, which can then become a food source for mold growth.

To find hidden mold behind walls you need to use invasive inspection methods and, optionally, mold testing. It's best to talk to a professional mold specialist in this case.

Spotting a water damage in your home

10/7/2020 (Permalink)

One thing most homeowners hate is water damage. If left untreated, water damage can impact your home's structure and even create other complications, such as mold that can initially affect your health. Here is a list of how to detect water damage in your home:

- Check your floors. For tile and wood flooring check for cracked or warped flooring. For carpet be on the look out for damp and soft spots, gradual rises, and the smell of mold.

- Inspect the Outside. When checking the exterior of your home look for pools of standing water which indicate poor yard drainage. Leaky rain gutters or gutters that don't transport water far enough away from the house. Roof water damage usually consists of cracked, curled, or missing shingles and pools of water.

- Mold. You cant solely depend on actually seeing mold to know you have it. Often times, you can smell it as well. When water stagnates, mold and bacteria can grow, which produces a unpleased, musty smell.

- Look for Stains. Water stains on the ceiling, walls, or in your bathroom around the bathtub and sink are the most common signs of water damage. When paint starts peeling off the walls it could be a sign of loose water within your wall spaces. Also, areas in the wall and ceiling that seem swollen and soft to the touch are another sign of water trouble.

If you read this and realize you have any of the signs for water damage, SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro can help. Its better to get the problem taken care of sooner than later, before damage potentially becomes worse.

Dealing with soot

10/7/2020 (Permalink)

More Problems Caused By Fire

After a fire is put out, property owners expect the need to replace any items that have burned. What many do not consider is the items that were not destroyed by the fire, but affected by the smoke. Smoke, the byproduct of materials burning, creates a lasting odor that is difficult to remove.

As smoke rises, it can seep into your walls, ceiling, and roof. Once the smoke fills your your attic or crawl space, it increases the likelihood of moving into your HVAC.

How SERVPRO Restores Your Property After A Fire

SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro is trained and has years of experience in removing and replacing insulation before your HVAC is affected. We get right to the root of the issue when dealing with smoke and soot. When we are on the job, we ensure that not only will your property be restored, but it is handled quickly before further damage ensues. Your job is to rest assured your odor problems are being taken of, and our job is to make it "Like it never even happened."

Fire damage

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

There are many things inside of your home that can cause fire damage. Some of them are even objects that you use every day of your life, such as your stove. At first glance, they are merely a part of your home and nothing to worry over, as they should be. However, if these devices are misused, they can cause a fire. Accidentally leaving your stove on, after you finish cooking, is an unfortunately common way to set a fire in your home.

Detecting a burning odor and hearing your smoke alarm in your Minneapolis home are significant indications that fire damage is occurring. The bacon grease left in your pan from cooking breakfast has caught fire and then spread to your nearby paper towel roll and cooking ingredients. By the time you use the fire extinguisher to smother the flames, your cupboards and belongings have already been covered in soot. Additionally, whatever foodstuffs were in the area have been burnt up by the fire.

At first glance, the damage may seem like something you can handle at home. After all, it has mostly been caused by smoke. However, only professionals, like SERVPRO, know specifically what cleaning method to use on the remains of a fire.

Soot adheres at a high temperature but selecting a method of remediation also depends on the temperature of the surface area. SERVPRO Of Middletown/Springboro knows precisely how to remediate the fire damage left behind in your home. Our technicians can carefully investigate your kitchen and figure out what cleaning methods to use. In fact, we may have to use more than one as it is common for multiple types of soot and staining to be left behind. To handle the soot, we can use lubricative, chemical, or abrasive cleaning techniques.

Science of drying

Have water, storm, flood, fire or mold damage? Call SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro today for service. #513-422-9200

Why Choose SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro

Psychrometry is the study of the air and its properties. The properties of temperature, humidity, vapor pressure, and dew point are measured to evaluate air conditions in the structure, enabling SERVPRO Professionals to create the proper atmosphere for more efficient drying.

Water can damage materials in two ways: first, by absorption through direct contact with water, and second, absorption of moisture from the air. Measuring the moisture content of the air is critical to the drying process.

Even small water damages from broken water pipes, overflown sinks, and dishwasher or washing machine malfunctions have the potential to cause severe structural and indoor air quality issues over time. The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro has the equipment, training, and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss.

SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro Professionals establish an environment favorable for drying. They also understand how to manipulate temperature and humidity levels to produce optimum drying conditions with state of the art detection equipment without causing secondary damages through improper drying processes.

When fire and water take control of your life, we help you take it back. Our goal is to make it..."Like it never even happened."

Removal of water

10/1/2020 (Permalink)

Removal of Water

The main issue with many storms is water damage. Thunderstorms typically lead to heavy rain, which can cause flash flooding. Also, if the roof is damaged by heavy winds, lightning, etc., then even light rain during a storm can cause severe water damage.

One of the first things a restoration company will look to do upon arrival to your home is to remove the standing water quickly. This helps prevent secondary water damage and issues such as mold. It can also make drying occur faster and thus a full restoration can be completed in less time. A professional restoration company will likely use certain equipment, including, but not limited to:

  • Moisture detectors
  • Infrared cameras
  • Dry Vacuum
  • Submersible water pumps
  • Truck-mounted vacuum units

Professional water removal is important because water can hide in hard-to-notice places, such as under carpet, floorboards, and on the inside of the walls. It is not uncommon for experienced and skilled water extraction professionals to remove hundreds of gallons of water in the initial stages of the restoration process.

Your house and smoke

9/23/2020 (Permalink)

Fall is here! With the change in seasons, people will be active both outside and indoors. Cooking inside is the #1 cause of house fires. Consider the following tips to ensure your family is safe.

  • Test Smoke Detector batteries every month
  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, both inside and outside of sleeping areas.
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  • Position barbecue grills at least 10 feet away from siding and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Never use a stove range or oven to heat your home.

Smoke Damage Cleanup

Smoke damage can leave a lasting impact on your house and make rooms unbearable to breathe in.

Before you begin cooking inside, it is important to understand the risks of smoke damage.

SERVPRO Of Middletown Springboro can help you eliminate smoke and fire damage professionally.

Humid environments are ripe for the development of mold and bacteria. Businesses always want to maintain safe environments, so drying them quickly and effectively is important.

HEPA air scrubbers remove contaminants from the air. Air scrubbers are also important in mold remediation and prevention. When filtering mold spores from the contaminated environment, HEPA filtration ensures that even the smallest soot or mold particles are removed from the air safely.

Commercial fire

Keep a Plan ready for a Fire Emergency at Work

Most business owners have plans for all types of emergencies. This is particularly important to protect their employees.

One such situation is in the event of a Fire. Where do employees and/or guest exit? How big is the building, are there multiple exits, are the employees trained on the quickest and safest routes? Be sure to begin with the basic plan. Employees should be aware of these plans and practice on a regular basis.

Build a Fire Safety team. The size of this team will depend on the number of employees and size of the building. This team would be in charge of developing the Fire escape plans and executing training protocols. Your company, with the safety team, can be in contact with your local Fire departments. The local Fire Departments are the best resource to know what you should and shouldn’t do in Fire Emergency Training.

Things to keep in mind: Do you need a sprinkler system? Do you have Fire Extinguishers located in proper locations? Do you need Fire Blankets? Do you know what to do first? Do you have anyone with special needs taken care of?

Always keep in mind-you want to keep employees and guests safe at all times. Once everyone is safe-then you execute your plan to get back to Business.

Water damage from a storm

Assessing Damage after a storm

Anything flood waters touch will need to be addressed. If the flooding is overwhelming, a SERVPRO professional will help you address the problem and provide services to get your home looking “Like it never even happened.” During an initial inspection, in addition to checking flooring and walls, check the following for any contact with the waters:

  • Clothing
  • Furniture
  • Carpet
  • Kitchen utensils, plates, cups, etc.
  • Appliances
  • Mattresses
  • Toys

While some of these may be able to be cleaned, such as appliances and furniture, some of them should be thrown away. Things like mattresses and stuffed animals can be difficult to completely clean. If a rug has been saturated more than 24 hours, it may need to be tossed. Any clothes, rugs and furniture should immediately be removed and set out to dry before cleaning.

A Thorough Clean

One of the main cleaning requirements for flood waters is a good disinfectant. It will not only eliminate bacteria, stains and odors but also help reduce the potential for mold to grow. Once any wet items have been dried, usually for at least 48 hours, the cleaning process can start. Be sure to clean anything that has been in contact with water and remember to take safety precautions during the process, such as:

  • Wear disposable gloves and clothing.
  • Avoid touching the face or eyes.
  • Refresh cleaning solution when it becomes cloudy.
  • Thoroughly wash hands after cleaning.

Water damage

4/1/2020 (Permalink)

When you discover a water damage in your home or business, do you know where the water has traveled?

Water travels. It does not just stop on the surface where it is more obvious. It will travel from the carpet into the padding and make its way to the subfloor. Water can travel under the baseboard and climb the drywall. The drywall can soak up the water like a sponge.

This is why it is important to hire professionals to take care of your water emergency. SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro will inspect and test the premises to determine the extent of the damage and how far the moisture has traveled. Our team wants to ensure proper and complete restoration, so you can go back to your normal lifestyle.

Water damage in the spring

2/28/2020 (Permalink)

Areas are already at flood action stage, which means water in streams and rivers is already at or near the top of the banks. As we haven’t even entered our winter thaw season, residents could be in for some water damage.

As spring rains are sure to come, its important to know the common causes of home flooding. Windows that are built below ground level are at specific risk for water seepage. While constructed to prevent water entering through the actual window opening, over time the structures supporting and surrounding window wells can form small cracks in which water can travel into when ground water levels are at saturation.

Another common cause to be aware of is foundation flooding. Foundation flooding can occur as foundations age, settle, and form cracks over time. It is important that your drainage gutters are far enough away from your foundation that no extra water buildup will affect its integrity. If the ground is saturated with water, that water still needs a path to follow, so any small pathway in your foundation could be exposed.

Another common cause of water damage during high water level periods is a failed sump pump. As we enter the time of the year with elevated precipitation it is crucial to make sure your sump pump is operating effectively.

We at SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro are standing by to help you with any issue that arises from potential water damage.

12/20/2019 (Permalink)

Here, winters can be brutal on our homes. Freezing pipes are always a possibility and can be costly to repair. Here are some tips if this issue occurs in your home. Tip #1 A hairdryer doesn't always do the trick when it comes to frozen pipes.Sometimes heating cables are necessary to dethaw a frozen pipe.they are like long extension cords you wrap around your cold water pipes to keep them from freezing. Pipes can also freeze behind walls which can cause issues in the long run. It can lead to mold or removal of the wall itself in order to fix the problem. If an exterior wall is not properly insulated it can cause interior pipes to freeze. If these issues happen to you, give SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro a call we're always here to help. another great tip is too leave your water drip just a little during the winter months. it will not impact your water bill too much and will save you costly repairs in the future.

Commercial water damage

12/19/2019 (Permalink)

Commercial losses include but are not limited to, restaurants, medical buildings, hotels, motels, shopping malls, warehouses, office buildings, schools, factories, and grocery stores. Many of these businesses are dramatically affected during a fire/water loss. Business can slow down, or shut down completely due to structural damage. Limitations to access to certain parts of the buildings can also be an issue. SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro have a crew that is trained to handle any size disaster at any hour of the day/night. Freezing pipes can lead to water damage

12/18/2019 (Permalink)

With temps getting colder in the  area there is a potential for pipes to freeze and cause serious water damage both outside and inside your home. Here are some tips to avoid frozen pipes in your home or business property.

On the inside:

If you will be away from home for days at a time, make sure that all of your pipes are kept warm, especially in spaces that receive little or no heat. If any pipes will stay exposed to freezing temperatures, open up one faucet with a very small drip to keep water moving through the pipes.  Also, leave cabinet doors open to expose pipes to the air temperature within the room.

On the outside:

Protect your pipes as you would protect your plants. Cover up your outside faucets with foam or towels to insulate them.  Make sure the water is turned off from the main valve. If you plan to be away from home this winter, remember to leave your contact information with a neighbor. You might consider giving them a key to your home, too, and leaving your preferred plumber's contact information behind should an emergency occur.

If your pipes burst and your home has water damage call your plumber and then call SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro.

Handle a sewage damage in your home

12/13/2019 (Permalink)

There are a number of things you’d prefer to never have to deal with in your home, and one of them is finding sewage damage. Whether you’ve come across a stubborn flooded toilet, a clogged drainage system or a full-blown flood from sewer backup, the end result is never pretty. If you’re wondering just how to go about treating and disinfecting your residence, here are three ways to instantly start managing sewer cleanup in a safe and responsible manner.

1. Avoid using the water supply system in your home if the damage is overwhelming.
You may be used to the occasional backed-up sink or toilet. However, if the damage is severe and the clog or disruption hasn’t been cleared yet, attempting to use any water in the home can result in even more destruction. It’s best to contact a professional team of water damage restoration specialists equipped to handle not only the immediate cleanup, but the necessary sterilization procedures afterwards to ensure your home is left safe and habitable.

2. If it’s still safe for you to be inside your home, wear protective clothing near the damaged areas.
When sewer cleanup is underway, keep your body covered in protective clothing and gear in order to prevent any contact with dirty, possibly-infected water. Items such as goggles, rubber boots and gloves are best for keeping your skin and eyes covered, while a basic face mask can prevent you from breathing in any toxic fumes.

3. Open your windows and utilize fans to air out the obtrusive smell.
While experienced restoration specialists are Here to Help and are prepared to deodorize your home before their job is done, you can help release some of the bad odors by using fans and keeping your windows open throughout the day.

Fire damage

12/11/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Fire in the fall

10/25/2019 (Permalink)

How To Have A Fire Free Fall

We are officially in the fall season! Which means we are in for cooler weather, beautiful colors, and a plethora of outdoor activities. With the temperature going down, SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro begins to see a rise in fires. Be sure to plan ahead this fall season to ensure its fire-free. Below are a few tips you can use to make sure you have a fire-free fall.

Highly flammable fall decorations, like dried flowers, cornstalks, and other decorations should be kept away from open flames and heat sources, including lightbulbs and heaters. Remember emergency exits should be clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes. Remember safety first when choosing a Halloween costume. Avoid billowing fabric as it can easily ignite. Lit pumpkins should be kept away from anything that can burn and out of the way from doorsteps, walkways, and yards.

Fire

10/17/2019 (Permalink)

Not all fires are started the same way. Some can be caused from a candle left on through the night or a cigarette not being put out all the way. Whatever the cause may be, all fires are messy and leave an unwanted burden on a number of individuals. We know the stress throughly but more important than that, we know how to help.

In the photo pictured here a local high school suffered a grease fire in its kitchen. While the cause remains unknown to us it does not matter to our services. Here at SERVPRO of Middleton Springboro we care about restoring your home, business, or property back to its original state. We are here to help you forget the stress of the damage and make you realize it is possible to make the problem look like it "Never even happened".

Signs of storm damage

10/9/2019 (Permalink)

  1. Roofs: Look for shingles that have discoloration, tearing, or even holes in them. These can all be signs that your roof has been damaged. Another sign of a rook leak is water marks on your ceilings.
  2. Gutters: After a hail storm, looking for dents or dings can also give you a better picture of what the storm did to the rest of your home. Your gutters can also give you insight to whether you have roof damage. Check to see if there are granules from the asphalt shingles in your gutter.
  3. Windows: Look at each of the windows at your homes and note any signs of shattered or broken windows and frame damage. This is especially important after a hail storm or a strong wind storm.
  4. Exterior: Not only is it important to look at the siding of your home to check for damage, it is also important that you check any appliances. Inspect your AC/HVAC unit as well as items such as a barbeque grill.
  5. After your inspection, if you notice any signs of storm damage follow up by checking the area for signs of mold, mildew, pests or other secondary damage. If damage has occurred have it repaired immediately. Call SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro at (513)422-9200 for any restoration needs you may have.

Fire puff back

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

A puff back is the puff of smoke and soot from a malfunctioning heating unit inside your furnace that brings gunk into your home. When a furnace works properly, it combines fuel and oxygen in balanced amounts for good, controlled combustion. The correct mix produces a steady flame and burns the fuel almost completely. The puff back happens when the mix is unbalanced. For example, when the rate of combustion in your furnace slows, but the fuel injected into the heating system remains constant, a sudden combustion may occur.

For example when a car backfires, a puff back can cause a “boom” and a big vibration. This vibration shakes loose  soot in the heating system as well as the duct work. The air stream of forced air that normally brings heat into your home instead brings these soot particles. Think of how the heat moves into all the areas of your home. The soot from a puff back will take the same path.

Residue from a puff back is usually an oily, sticky film whose base is petroleum. It has a strong distinct smell and makes a mess that permeates everything. Because the puff back is backed up by a little explosion, these soot particles get a boost getting into the combination of nooks and small crevices, propulsion and a petroleum base makes the mess caused by a puff back so difficult to tackle. Often traditional cleaning methods make the mess even worse than when you started. In some cases they also use sealants to preventing re-contamination.In most cases, an immediate response by a trained professional from SERVPRO is recommended.

A plan for a water damage

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

Water loss incidents can be among the most damaging situations that your Bridgewater residence can face because of how quickly the effects can spread from the source throughout the property. Even with a fast response to the situation like our team can provide, specialized equipment and effective drying tools are necessary immediately to prevent irreparable damage and ruin to structural elements and construction materials. Cleaning up after a water loss incident is critical to returning a property to preloss condition.

Our SERVPRO professionals have IICRC-Certifications as cleaning technicians, allowing us to seamlessly transition between vital mitigation of water damage in your home and the cleanup of the situation once this work has completed. Cleaning up after water damage can often involve physically wiping and scrubbing surfaces, but it can also entail deodorization and reducing microbial threats that could occur as well.

Much of the cleaning work that our SERVPRO team performs when recovering water loss incidents hinges on advanced tools and equipment. With indoor air quality concerns and the abundance of mold spores and other potential threats following water cleanup, we arrive with machines capable of reducing these concerns such as our hydroxyl generators and air scrubbers. With onboard HEPA filters, spores, particulates, debris, and other contaminants can get trapped and easily removed from the premises.

Many severe water loss situations require partial reconstruction and build back to restore a property entirely. Our cleaning technicians can get to work on cleaning up the dust and debris from this phase of restoration as soon as it completes. We have a team of professionals with high-powered vacuums and safe, green cleaning agents to make every portion of the property look its best.

Fire prevention

Fire Prevention Week 2019 is October 6th through the 12th

Plan and Practice Your Escape
In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out.

In a fire, just seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.

When it comes to fire safety, maybe you’re already a hero in your household or community. If not, maybe you’re feeling inspired to become one. It's easy to take that first step - make your home escape plan, when it comes to fire you can never over plan.

Different types of smoke damage

9/23/2019 (Permalink)

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises, therefore, smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Flood cuts

9/17/2019 (Permalink)

Damage from flooding is among the most trying of challenges for any homeowner. Depending on the severity of the saturation and level of contamination, it may be necessary to tear out certain building materials to avoid bigger problems down the line. Restoration professionals might advise making what is known as a flood cut in order to spare as much existing drywall and insulation as possible. Learn what you should expect if this approach is recommended for your residence or business.

The Cut That Heals

If you dip a paper towel into a pool of water, the liquid will begin to wick upward and absorb into the towel. Unfortunately, drywall tends to act in a similar fashion when flooding occurs, allowing moisture to creep up well beyond the visible high watermark. This is one situation where a flood cut may be employed as follows:

1. Cuts are typically made at least 12 inches above the waterline, ensuring that a majority of affected materials are safely removed.
2. Industrial air movers and dehumidifiers can be placed to begin drying the environment, returning it to the dry standard.
3. Building inspection tools such as moisture meters can be used to determine that flood-related effects have been effectively eliminated.

Biohazard

9/12/2019 (Permalink)

Heavy Sewage Back Up In Basement. No match for SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro.

Sewage Back-Up

No one wants sewage in their basement but it happens very often from heavy rain storms. It is not rare that during heavy rains the sewer lines fill up with water much faster than they drain due to insufficient system capacity. This fact may lead to a sewage backup as the water flows back through residential floor drains and causes overflows. This type of water is a called Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

24 Hour Emergency Service

  • Water contaminated with sewage backup should be considered an emergency situation and dealt with as quickly as possible. SERVPRO professionals are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are water damage restoration specialists with specialized training, equipment and protective gear to safely restore your home or business.

Property owners and mold

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

Many property owners recognize the structural hazards posed by mold growth, but not everyone is aware that tenants can sue property managers over mold damage. In order to avoid potential lawsuits, the best course of action is to be proactive. Know your insurer’s policy on mold insurance claims, understand your responsibility as a property owner and take steps to prevent mold growth before it becomes an issue.

Insurance Coverage

Don’t hesitate to ask your insurance providers about their policy on mold insurance claims. Some types of property insurance may only cover mold damage if it was caused by a specific event. Covered events might include:

  • Snow or ice damage
  • Frozen pipes
  • Building fires
  • Accidental leakage from appliances or air conditioning

Furthermore, every landlord should also carry liability insurance. Liability insurance can be a lifesaver if a tenant decides to sue because his or her personal property is ruined by mold.

Storm damage

9/9/2019 (Permalink)

Sewer backup heavy rains is not uncommon. This can result in just a few inches of standing water or several feet of rain water accumulating. Knowing how to remove this water safely and properly is important. You might also consider putting preventative measures in place to reduce the risk of this situation in the future.

Removing Sewage Backup

First and foremost, you want to shut off the electricity and gas in the space that was affected by the backup. Then, the most important part is to get all of the standing water out as quickly as possible. A sump or trash pump might be beneficial for this step in the process. Once removed, start by opening windows and doors and running fans to air out the space.

It is important that sewer backup is promptly removed to avoid additional problems. Once it is gone and restoration is completed, consider instituting preventative measures to help to decrease the chances of your home experiencing this issue in the future.

Insurance policy

9/4/2019 (Permalink)

When one thinks of a water damage incident they may not think of it in a context of their own home, if they even think about it at all. SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro sees water damages happen every day and at different times of the day/night. Reviewing or speaking with your homeowner’s insurance company or agent can be helpful. An extension of that would be to read your policy in detail and ask your agent to go over or explain some of your policy. Sewer back up if an often over looked item in policies. If you are a renter and not a homeowner you should still have a contents insurance policy. Learn where the water shut off valve is in your home. Knowing where that is can be helpful in the event of an emergency.

Different types of fire damage.

9/4/2019 (Permalink)

Dry Smoke

Dry smoke damage is caused when substances such as  are the fuel for the fire. These fires are fast burning, have high temperatures and the heat rises therefore the smoke rises. Because the residue is powdery and dry, it is often simpler to clean since it is easy to wipe off. However, it can fall into cracks and porous surfaces, and while the soot may be hidden from view, the smell will remain.

Wet Smoke

Wet smoke damage typically comes from fires in which plastic, rubber and other synthetic materials have burned. These fires are a lower temperature. They can be described as having a smoldering, pungent odor and they leave a sticky and thick residue that is more difficult to remove.

Protein Residue

Protein residue is left behind after the evaporation of organic material such as food. The residue is produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire. The residue is almost invisible however it discolors varnishes, paints, and finishes. It also gives off a strong, offensive odor that our techs know well and can easily identify. Because it is invisible to the eye, however, a homeowners might get frustrated with the pungent smell since they can’t see the source.

When we inspect your fire damaged structure, we will determine which method of cleaning is required. Depending on the type of smoke damage and the surface that is affected, we may utilize the following cleaning methods to remove smoke and soot damage.

  • Dry Sponging
  • Wet Cleaning
  • High Efficiency Particulate Air-filtration (HEPA) Vacuuming
  • Thermal Fogging

Prepared for a storm

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

Flooding due to Storm Event

A good rule of thumb is to perform inspections on your home before a storm hits. Sit down and go over some questions to ask yourself, such as, do all of your windows and doors fit to create a tight seal? When was the last time you had the roof inspected? Are the trees in the yard trimmed and cut back enough, so they are not hitting your dwelling repeatedly should high winds surface?

In the event of a bad storm do you have an emergency plan in place? Do you have an emergency ready bag for you and all family members living with you, in case you need to leave your home? Is there a designated meeting spot secured? Having an emergency plan for communication may be a good idea as well.

SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro is here to help for any of your storm damage needs. We do board ups, roof tarpings, water damages, as well as fire damages that may result from storm damage. We are always ready and #HereToHelp.

Fire and smoke damage

7/26/2019 (Permalink)

When fires occurs, in both residential homes and business alike, it’s not just the cleaning up of the structural areas that we need to be concerned with.

Our crews have to be so careful with the homeowner’s personal belongings because the insurance companies need very specific documentation in order to appropriately compensate the insured so they they have money to replace all of the damaged items. The fallen debris must be sifted through prior to bagging for disposal so that any contents, which may be very small items, can be separated for further valuation.

SERVPRO of of Middletown Springboro team members need to be very aware of properly bagging and separating these items, so taking our time in small spaces with lots of contents is a very important part of the clean-up process.

Fire/smoke damage

7/25/2019 (Permalink)

Cleaning smoke stains off walls and ceilings can be a difficult task. Even if the fire was small like a cooking fire, the smoke can quickly discolor your ceilings and walls. Since smoke rises, the smoke usually damages your ceilings first as the smoke spreads across the ceiling leaving smoke residue. While smoke can usually be cleaned easily off metal and smooth surfaces like counters and ovens, ceilings and walls are not so easy to clean, specially if you have very high ceilings.

While we all hope we never have to suffer through the experience of a house fire, it is important to know what to do if one should happen. Obviously, the first thing you should do is ensure the fire has been extinguished completely.

This can be done by someone in the home if the fire is small and can be put out easily and safely. Or by the fire department if the fire is too big and dangerous to safely extinguish by the homeowner. It’s important to note that it’s always best to call the fire department right as soon as a fire is spotted and to get everyone out of the home quickly and safely.

SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro is available 24/7 365 for any emergency you may have, (513) 422-9200.

Act before a water damage

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

When a flood hits your home, there is not much time to collect yourself, let alone start to mitigate damages.  However, if you can manage to get things in motion quickly, you may be able to reduce expenses and repair times associated with flood damage to your residence or business.  Here are a few things to try to act on after a damage.

Get Things Higher Up Before a flash flood - You may want to spend some time in the hours before it hits moving your belongings to higher ground.  Floods don't often reach higher than a few feet in the home, and you should be able to keep most of your belongings safe by taking them to higher floors or placing them on counter-tops and secure tables.  Be careful not to place too much trust in a table, however, as it may buckle or overturn as floodwaters overtake it.

SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro is quick to respond in any kind of disaster. We are emergency services and available 24/7 365

Mold removal

2/25/2019 (Permalink)

There is only a couple ways to remove mold, and there is a ton of ways not to remove mold correctly. A lot of things people use to remove mold is bleach, which is something you absolutely do not use at all, it actually feeds the mold and helps it grow. There is a process to remove mold that involves a lot of safety precautions not only for your health but also to keep it from spreading and cross contaminating other content or building materials.

If you experience a water damage be sure to call the professionals at SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro so we can get it dried to avoid any microbial growth. We are available to help 24/7 365 days a year. Don’t hesitate to call to schedule an appointment at (513)422-9200.

Removing mold

2/25/2019 (Permalink)

There are thousands of different kinds of molds. A lot of times if you suspect mold in your house you may want to get a mold test. However a mold test isn’t really necessary if mold is visible. The first thing we would want to do is figure why mold is growing and creating mold colonies. Mold needs three things to stay dormant and survive, which is a mold spore, moisture, and a food source. The food source can be anything from dry wall dust, insulation etc...etc... Once the source has been fixed that caused the mold we can remediate it. SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro professionals are available 24/7 365. If you have any questions or concerns on mold you can call our office at (513)422-9200.

We offer bio hazard cleanup

10/18/2018 (Permalink)

Biohazardous Clean Ups By SERVPRO of East Hamilton Fairfield Means Good Results

A biohazard spill often involves some type of bodily fluid. In private homes, this usually means a blood spill. There are certain risks when it comes to restoring a home after an incident with blood happens, and they need to seriously considered before cleanup efforts begin.

Residents should not attempt to clean up a blood spill in their home. Even without the emotional component, there is the risk of disease and other pathogens in even a small amount of blood. SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro understands both elements and how to deal with them when developing a restoration plan.

Cleaning and removing blood and blood stains require chemical cleaners designed to neutralize the pathogens in them. Infectious diseases found in blood spills and splatters include Hepatitis A, B, and C, as well as HIV and many others. To ensure we do this properly, our technicians utilize anti-bacterial cleaners we keep on-hand.

The anti-bacterial cleaners are necessary since blood does not respond to conventional cleaners like dirt or soot. Conventional agents do not always clean blood completely and even when they do, there is often, a stain remaining at the spill point. Leaving a visible mark is not something we accept; if we cannot remove the entire mark, our technicians can repaint the affected area or remove the stained structural property.

Restoring your home after any disaster is difficult. Cleaning up a blood spill is one of the more difficult tasks we face, but SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro is here to help. We want to return your home to its original state so that you can move forward when the time is right for you. Call us today at. Call (513)422-9200 to schedule an inspection and get started.

Cleaner air = healtiheier employees

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

If you think the air you breathe indoors is cleaner than what’s outside, think again. The EPA estimates indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. All that bad air translates into everything from frequent colds and sore throats to headaches, asthma, allergies and chronic fatigue, which in turn causes employee downtime.

When dust and debris and other contaminants build up in your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, they can trigger allergies and other health problems. But they also reduce energy efficiency, which increases your energy costs. Now you have two compelling reasons to make sure the air ducts and HVAC system in your workplace are running efficiently.

If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating one or more of the following:

Dust

Pollen

Odors

Dirt and debris

Other contaminants

SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro Professionals routinely inspect the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC).  Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can in turn save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe.

Ways to Keep your toilet from flooding

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

1. Put Up Signs

Posting basic rules for waste disposal near toilets can reduce the frequency of clogs and flooded toilets in a property. Recommend occupants and guests dispose of all feminine hygiene and paper products other than toilet paper in trash cans or containers and place these receptacles in convenient locations.

2. Provide Alternative Disposal Containers

It is a good idea to supply every stall in a women's bathroom with some type of bin to offer a convenient disposal alternative to flushing. By making the disposal of products that should not be flushed easier and more discreet, you can prevent clogs and backups before they start.

3. Order Thinner Toilet Paper

Single-ply paper is less likely to cause a clogged toilet than thicker toilet paper. Even if a building occupant or guest flushes a large wad of thinner paper, it is less likely to cause an overflow than two-ply or cushioned paper or wipes. You may also want to consider a toilet paper dispenser that restricts the amount of paper that can be rolled out at a time.

These three steps can reduce the likelihood, or at least the frequency, with which toilets flood a commercial property. If your property does suffer water or sewage damage as a result of a clogged toilet or toilet overflow, contact a plumber to eliminate the clog and SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro’s expertise and equipment to repair these types of water damage.

Purpose of a flood cut

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

After a storm rages it is likely that your home will experience a bit of flooding. When this happens, you will probably hear the water professionals from SERVPRO you hire talk about making a flood cut. A flood cut is a mark that is made 12 inches above the spot where the water damage stops. Specialists tear out everything below the flood cut to stop the spread of contamination and prevent mold growth. Here are some common questions about this process.

1. What Circumstances Require a Flood Cut?

Any time there is damage that cannot be dried with a fan, professionals are probably going to use a flood cut to be on the safe side. Insulation cannot be dried, so if there is wet insulation, the wall has to be cut out and the insulation removed. If the water is contaminated by storm-related debris or sewage, the wall must be discarded. If tests show any harmful microbes, the affected area must go.

2. Why Does the Flood Cut Have To Be a Foot Above the Damage?

Water damage from flooding does not like to stay politely in its place. What technicians can see with the naked eye may only be the beginning of the story. Placing the flood cut 12 inches above the visible water damage ensures that everything affected is remediated.

3. Is There Any Way To Save the Wall?

If the water damage is minimal and no insulation is affected, it is possible that quick removal of water and fast drying techniques can allow the wall to be salvaged. The water in question must also be clean. If it is contaminated at all, the wall has to be replaced.

Extracting Water From Pipe Break

The next step after inspection is water cleanup, which is a major mitigation strategy after a supply line break or pipe break. This involves removing water from all the rooms in a flooded home using vacuums and pumps. The extent of the damage caused by water in home determines the type of equipment the restoration company will use. The water should be removed as soon as possible to avoid bacterial and mold growth. The water from a supply line break or pipe break should be contained and extracted immediately to prevent further damage in a flooded home.

It is advisable to remove all wet materials like toys, clothing, pillows, throw rugs, and carpets from the affected area before water cleanup. Our professionals can expedite drying by removing wet surfaces on floors, ceiling, and walls after water cleanup. Unsalvageable dry walls or insulations such as baseboards should be removed to accelerate drying. The other method that can be used to accelerate drying in a water cleanup process involves opening cabinet doors and drawers.

Fall maintenance to avoid water damage

10/9/2018 (Permalink)

As much fun as summer can be, it has to end at some point. As the trees begin to change and the weather shifts from hot and humid to cool and crisp, it’s time to prepare for the onset of cooler months. Whether you’re ready for hot cocoa and sweaters or are still holding on to ice cream and swim suits, there’s a lot to do to get ready for the changing seasons.

  1. Inspect your roof
If you have a heavy rainstorm or a foot of snow, does your roof have what it takes to handle that? Before settling in for another chilly fall and a freezing winter take a look at your roof for weak spots or cracks in your shingles and granules. If you see anything that looks off or unstable, a roofer may be what your home needs to weather this winter’s weather conditions.
  2. Clean out your gutters
As the leaves begin to turn, you know you’re only weeks away from them falling off entirely and stopping up your gutters and down spouts. Before you find yourself with a big mess on your hands, take the time now to clean out your gutters and drainpipes to prevent the possibility of water damage and clogs. A clean early in the season may not be sufficient through the winter, but it will make sure you’re prepared for the harsher weather to come. Water damages can be caused by clogged drains or overflowing water to collect on your roof.

Preparing your house for fall may not be what you planned to do during your weekend, but it’s something you’ll thank yourself for later when you don’t have to pay for repairs, most of the time even a covered claim will still have a deductible. With the right measures taken now, you will be prepared to settle in for the fall.

You should make notes about what items are ruined or damaged and take photographs too. You’ll be contacting your insurance company and a restoration contractor, so you want to be sure about your circumstances. This should be done within hours after the fire is extinguished.

Once you have a clear picture of the damage, call your insurance company. Hopefully, you can do this the next day. It is important to call them as soon as possible, so they will send an insurance adjustor to your home or office quickly.

Protect your home/business from flooding

10/2/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage is no match for SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro restoration professionals.

Flooding can happen anywhere and if you live in Florida, you know even one of our heavy afternoon thunderstorms can ensure flooding can happen "any time" as well.

It's a scary thought to think that your home could be under water in a moments notice.

So we thought we would share a few tips that can help you stay flood free.

  1. Water flow - How does water flow around your house? It's important that it flows away from the structure. If it is noted that this is not the case, you may want to call an irrigation specialist to see if it is possible to correct get it fixed without spending a fortune.
  2. Water valves - Modify them. So many times in flooding cases we see sewage backup and overflow. That is the LAST thing you want to be dealing with, so it may be worth it to look at installing a back-flow valve.
  3. Lastly, in the event that you believe flooding is about to occur, move as many items as you can away from the rising water (electronics especially). Then give us a call, and we will be out there ASAP to help!

If you experience flooding or water damage, call SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro at: (513)422-9200

Don’t wait to dry out a water damage

10/1/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage that goes untouched for days could cause mold to appear along with musty odors. Your wood flooring would start to warp and swell up, which could eventually be unsalvageable, and the wallpapers would begin to peel. If you ignore the problem for weeks, you will notice molds destroying the integrity and foundation of your house. The growth can cause some health issues, and you may consider moving your family away during the treatment process.

Luckily, with the SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro team, we could save your house from this catastrophe. We have a crew of trained specialists that could respond to any immediate flood or water damages at your property. Water damage is an urgent case, so we make our services available on a 24-hour basis.

We have a variety of high-tech equipment to locate the water and remove it as soon as possible. We even invest in the latest technology and tools to restore your house quickly. We utilize professional cleaning, deodorizing, and sanitizing products to fix the damages in your home. Our technicians would monitor and document the drying process in a system we call “Dry Book” to make sure that your property is restored. Before we start the whole process, we would discuss our findings with homeowners and come up with an excellent plan that works best to restore the house.

Having a plan for pets during a storm

10/1/2018 (Permalink)

Pets are just as important as any family member to most people, so why would you not make them a part of your preparedness planning? There are several things you can do to make sure they stay safe as well during an emergency. Pet Emergency Kit Ready.gov/animals lists the below items as essential to building your Pet emergency kit.

  1. Food: At least a three-day supply in an airtight, waterproof container.
  2. Water: At least three days of water specifically for your pets.
  3. Medicines and medical records.
  4. Important documents that you may find helpful
  5. First aid kit: Cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape and scissors; antibiotic ointment; flea and tick prevention; latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol and saline solution. Including a pet first aid reference book is a good idea as well.

7.Collar or harness with ID tag, rabies tag and a leash.

8.Crate or pet carrier: Have a sturdy, safe crate or carrier in case you need to evacuate. The carrier should be large enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down.

  1. Sanitation: Pet litter and litter box if appropriate, newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach.
  2. A picture of you and your pet together: If you become separated, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you. Add species, breed, age, sex, and color.

Smoke damage and soot

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

When it comes to smoke or fire damage restoration, fast action is important. Following the initial fire or smoke-related incident, smoke and soot will settle on surfaces creating additional damage to the structure and your contents.  Smoke contains a wide variety of chemicals and by products, many of them aggressive in nature.

Material in furniture and flooring is often synthetic and when burned, creates chemical reactions. After only a short period of time, items can go from cleanable to unsalvageable. The longer acid or corrosive gasses stay on at-risk surfaces, the worse pitting or etching becomes. Pre-cleaning methods neutralize the acid and protect metal and glass, marble, china, chrome and more. We have them expertise and chemicals to make a situation like it never even happened.

Contact SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro at (513)422-9200 to learn more about our smoke and fire damage restoration. We are a 24 hour emergency services company.

Quick response is important

9/25/2018 (Permalink)

When a flood hits your home, there is not much time to collect yourself, let alone start to mitigate damages.  However, if you can manage to get things in motion quickly, you may be able to reduce expenses and repair times associated with flood damage to your residence.  When a flood hits, try your best to follow these points of advice to minimize property damage and headache in the ensuing days and weeks.

Get Things Higher Up Before the Storm - You may want to spend some time in the hours before it hits moving your belongings to higher ground.  Floods don't often reach higher than a few feet in the home, and you should be able to keep most of your belongings safe by taking them to higher floors or placing them on counter-tops and secure tables.  Be careful not to place too much trust in a table table, however, as it may buckle or overturn as floodwaters overtake it.

SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro is quick to respond in any kind of disaster. We are emergency services and open 24/7, call our office at (513)422-9200.

Business fires

9/25/2018 (Permalink)

Let SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro start your Emergency Ready Profile for your business today.

According to the US Small Business Administration, as many as one in four businesses that suffer some kind of major disaster do not reopen afterward.  It's true, overcoming a major loss is extremely difficult, but with the right restoration company and team on your side, working hand-in-hand with your insurance company, the chance of your company surviving is pretty actually pretty high.

Depending on the size of the fire, and the amount of damage, some businesses that have come to SERVPRO for help have reopened just days after the fire happened.  Thanks to expertise and experiences in the smoke odor removal, fire damage restoration and cleaning in general, it is possible for crews to start work nearly immediately after the fire department clears the scene, and have things back up and running in no time.  Although, again, that all depends on the severity of the fire.  But no matter the severity, recovery is possible and the best option.

Mold damage in your commercial business

9/21/2018 (Permalink)

The last thing a business owner needs is a mold outbreak. Mold thrives in our warm temperatures as long as it has a moisture source and a surface made of or coated with organic material upon which to grow. Nearly every commercial space can supply these requisites, but we have the trained technicians, appropriate tools, and effective products to remediate a mold outbreak and suggestions to help you avoid a repeat fungal performance.

Take mold damage in your business seriously, but do not panic. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training and protocols we use to remediate mold outbreaks work well. Our experience in mold abatement permits us to structure our response to allow non-moldy spaces in your business to remain open during the job in many cases. Maintaining a presence and being available to your customers is vital to your continued success in our community.

Call SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro at (513)422-9200 with any mold issues.

Dangers of DIY fire restoration

9/21/2018 (Permalink)

Homeowners Often Take on Unnecessary Risks to Cleanup Up Their Properties After a Fire Loss

One of the most troubling things about a disaster in your home is the uncertainty of when your home can ever look or feel the same again. With a situation like a fire in your residence, you want to correct the effects of this incident as quickly as possible to ensure that you do not allow for the situation to get worse. The temptation is probably high to immediately start to dry and clean or restore your damaged home on your own; there are many concerns that you should know.

As much as you want to save money and do things yourself, your hoke offers requires a professional restoration company.  There are too many variables and threats that exist within the house that the average homeowner is ill-prepared to face. Our SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro team of professionals can respond quickly and help to mitigate further damages while we prepare a plan to restore your home.

One of the most significant risks that a homeowner faces, once their home is affected by fire damages, is environmental exposure. With dirt, debris, soot, and smoke circulating throughout the air in the affected areas of your house, these contaminants to the atmosphere can lead to illness or breathing concerns for an individual without the appropriate protective equipment. Our technicians have the safety gear to prevent exposure in hazardous areas such as full-face respirators.

Another potential concern for the homeowner after a fire has gotten extinguished is a weakening of structural components and construction materials. It is not at all uncommon for ceilings to collapse, floors to give way, or walls to fall over. This risk is one that our SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro professionals assume as we seek to begin the restoration process, but not one that you should.

As tempting as it might be to save yourself the cost of restoration, most homeowners would find that to restore their home to their insurance company’s standards correctly and safely, they need professional and experienced specialists. Our SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro team is available 24/7 by calling (513)422-9200

Restore after a fire

9/18/2018 (Permalink)

After a fire, cleaning the contents and the structure as a whole is part of the restoration services. Different types of fire damage require different cleaning methods, and it is the work of our SERVPRO technicians to determine the most appropriate way of cleaning. The initial cleaning can be enough for some situations, while in others, we may advise you to do some refinishing and repainting.

After cleaning the various areas and contents, it is time to conduct deodorization. The process aims at getting rid of the unpleasant odors that are left behind after a fire. In most cases, identifying the sources of these smells is a difficult task since some of them may be coming from hard to access areas like cracks. We have the right tools that spray deodorizers into those spaces and neutralize the odor sources.

When it is not possible to conduct the restoration when your contents are still in place, we may recommend a move-out. Such is necessary when our SERVPRO team analyzes the situation and finds out the materials can accrue more loss if we do not relocate them to another area. During the move-out, it is our job to do the inventory together with any detailed cleaning and deodorization.

At SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro, We’re Faster To Any Size of mold, water, storm, and fire damaging incidents. Call us today at (513)422-9200 and be served by an industry leader.

We are an emergency services as available 24/7 365 and here to help. Don’t hesitate to give us a call if you just have a question or if you need help.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3 in which mold can possibly start forming colonies.

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.

Grill safety

8/21/2018 (Permalink)

There is nothing better than grilling out in the summertime or a nice fall day. Everyone love’s to see fire in the grill, under hot dogs and burgers at any outdoor party or family cookout. However, if a grill is not managed properly, an unwelcomed fire can turn your family cookout into a catastrophe. Here are some tips for keeping everyone at the party safe while grilling out:

General Grilling Tips

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors and preferable off of wooden decks.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the house, deck railings and out from under leaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grilling area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.

If you have any questions or need help call SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro at (513)422-9200.

Smoke alarms

8/21/2018 (Permalink)

Test smoke alarms monthly using the test button. Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries need the entire smoke alarm unit replaced every ten years or sooner . Other alarms need batteries replaced every year at least, and the unit replaced every ten years. If the alarm chirps signaling low battery(yes that annoying chirp that a lot of us listen to for months before changing), take the proper steps to replace the unit or the batteries immediately. Never disable or remove the battery from an alarm. Almost half of fires where smoke alarms were present but did not activate had missing or disconnected batteries. If you need help installing, testing or changing batteries in your smoke alarms, contact your local fire department, an electrician or the American Red Cross. Be sure your home has a fire emergency plan in place and conduct regular fire drills with your family.

Hints to avoid disaster

7/17/2018 (Permalink)

Here are 10 helpful hints to help avoid damage to your home or place of business…

  1. Do not leave electronics on the floor. This includes, IPads, computers, DVD players, etc.
  2. Leave a 3 to 4 inch gap between the back of the washing machine and the wall to avoid kinking the hose near the valve connection. Replace your washing machine hose every 5 years.
  3. Pay attention to your water bill. A significant increase could indicate a leak.
  4. Make sure each resident in your home or place of business knows where the main shut-off is located.
  5. Have a professional roof inspection annually.
  6. Inspect your plumbing pipes on an annual basis for condensation or obvious leaks or corrosion.
  7. After flushing the toilet, remain in the area until the fill valve has finished refilling.
  8. Make sure your downspouts are directed 5 to 10 feet away from your house. Clean all build up of debris from downspouts monthly.
  9. Chemical drain cleaners can eat away at your pipes. Use a drain snake first. This is suggested every 3-4 months depending on the size of your household.
  10. Flush your hot water heater every 6 months to remove sediment. You can call in a licensed plumber to assist.

The Fourth of July

7/4/2018 (Permalink)

The 4th of July is here, which means FIREWORKS! Please keep these tip in mind when you're popping Fireworks!

Firework Safety Tips

  • Follow the directions on all fireworks and don't use them for anything other than what they're intended for.
  • Don't attempt to alter or combine fireworks products.
  • Never use homemade fireworks.
  • Report illegal explosives to the nearest fire or police department.
  • When lighting fireworks, always have water handy. A hose is best, but a bucket will suffice.
  • Spectators should remain a safe distance from the fireworks being lit.
  • Whoever lights the fireworks must be sober, wear safety glasses, and keep clothing well away from the flame when lighting.
  • Only light fireworks outdoors on a smooth, flat surface, away from all flammable materials including dry leaves and paper.
  • Never try to relight fireworks that appear to be duds. Wait up to 20 minutes for a possible delayed ignition. Then if nothing happens, soak the firework in a bucket of water and dispose of it.
  • Dispose of all firework materials by first soaking them in water before putting them in the trash.
  • Keep sparklers away from clothing and other flammable materials.

Fire Hazards

7/4/2018 (Permalink)

Below are the most common Fire Hazards in your home.

  • Alcohol and Fire

It's a fact that many house fires are caused by someone attempting to cook or smoke while under the influence of alcohol.

  • Candles

Candle fires happen in places like bedrooms and bathrooms where people use them as mood enhancers. Unfortunately, people can fall asleep with a candle still burning or leave the room without snuffing out the flame. Candles should NEVER be left burning unattended!

  • Cooking

Many items in the kitchen can catch fire easily including pot holders, dish towels, and product packaging. Keep curtains away from the stove and clean up all spills on the stove top or near by counters.

  • Electrical

Unsafe use of electricity can be a  ticking time bomb! An electrical fire can happen at any time. Follow-up when a fuse or circuit breaker blows. Don't just reset the breaker or replace the fuse. Find out what caused the problem.

  • Cigarettes

Too many fires are caused from careless disposal of smoking materials.

Eliminate mold problems

6/27/2018 (Permalink)

No one wants mold damage anywhere in their home, but the laundry room is a common and frustrating area where it makes itself known. You try to remove the mold yourself without success and finally ask, "what company near me holds the key to complete mold remediation?" The answer is SERVPRO, your local mold management and remediation experts.

It is not surprising that mold damage plagues your Middletown Springboro laundry room. Plenty of organic material and a wide range of microbial accelerants lie in your laundry room. The area is isolated, in an out of the way corner of your home. The long term leaks on the back of your washer itself is a treasure trove of nooks and crannies that hide mold growth. You sniff the musty odor every time you open the door to the laundry room.

Dealing with persistent mold is not a do it yourself job. All your efforts fail because mold is a tricky problem that requires remediation experts from SERVPRO to conquer. Mold can hide behind cabinet areas in places you may not be able to visibly see. Hoses and other plumbing connections may be examined for leaks and evidence of mold growth.

The washer and dryer themselves are possibly a source of mold contamination. Our Mold Professionals may require a Mold Test by a 3rd party for air quality and spore count, unless mold is visible then no mold test is needed. If Hoses and seals are the problems, a referral to an appliance repair specialist makes sense. Proper Containment and Mold Remediation can move your laundry room back to fresh-smelling instead of odor-creating.

If you have concerns and detect odors or see suspect microbial growth, call our friendly staff at SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro 513-422-9200 to set up a consultation.

Flood Damage Restoration

As a homeowner, flood damage can be very destructive, and if you do not take care of it right away, the extra water in your home can cause electrical hazards and expensive damage to your home. It can also lead to the growth of hazardous mold. Therefore, when the worst happens, you need to call our experts at SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro so that we can come in with our professionals and equipment to dry out your home as quickly as possible.

When your home floods it can be one of the most destructive forms of damage you can experience.

We also understand that it is a very stressful time. That is why our team of caring, trained and professional Water Damage Technicians is here when you need us at any time. We will lead you through the process, step by step, and do all that is needed efficiently and quickly, so we can get your home and life back to normal as soon as possible.  When the unexpected happens, we at SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro can be to your home quickly to get your home cleaned up. With our rapid response, your walls, floors, and personal property will have a much better chance of being restored to its original state.

Sources from outside or inside the structure can cause water intrusions to your home. Excessive rain can over saturate the ground, which results in hydrostatic pressure. This happens when the moisture outside your home or foundational wall is greater than the pressure inside. Since water naturally seeks out lower pressure, this can result in foundational leaks, and even cracking. We use professional equipment at SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro to efficiently and quickly remove the water before it begins to cause damage to your structure and other, secondary water problems. We will also bring in dehumidifiers which work to get rid of any moisture and start moving the air to assist in drying out your home. Once the water and moisture are entirely removed, we clean, sanitize and treat with an antimicrobial agent to ensure that you don’t experience any mold growth. We work with you each step of the way and can also work with your insurance company so that your claim gets processed as fast as possible.

When you experience any flood damage, contact us right away at SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro so that we can quickly come out and restore your property. We have the skilled technicians on hand at all hours to assist you when you call us at 513-422-9200.

Floating carpet

At SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro we like to showcase some of the many process we use to restore items rather than replace them. The key to helping both the client and the Insurance Company are providing great service and keeping cost low. One of the ways we reduce cost is to restore rather than replace.

In this picture we see a section of carpet being 'floated', floating is when an air mover is used to push air underneath a carpet to aid in drying it after a water damage. This is not an option in every scenario, but if the water is category 1, and does not contain any potential health concerns then we can dry it in place. This saves the carpet from having to be replaced which can be very costly. Call us at anytime for we are emergency services 513-422-9200

Fire tips

4/20/2018 (Permalink)

Home fires make up the majority of disasters Red Cross responds too.

Below are eight important fire safety tips

#1 Make sure your street number is visible from the street so that public safety personnel can quickly locate your property in case of emergency.

#2 Prevent landscaping from growing over and around fire hydrants. The time it takes to search for a fire hydrant could be critical!

#3 Turn off electrical, including ceiling fans, before leaving your residence for an extended period. Ceiling fan motors can overheat and cause fires if left on for extended periods.

#4 The sale, offering for sale, display, possession or discharge of fireworks by any person or entity within Rancho Mirage is prohibited.

#5 Do not store flammable items near a heat source, such as a hot water heater, as they can combust.

#6 Fire extinguishers should always be kept in the home and checked on an annual basis. Fire extinguishers are a requirement for businesses.

#7 Keep fresh batteries in your smoke detectors by replacing them twice a year. A good reminder is to change them when you set your clocks ahead/back for daylight saving time.

#8 Keep a wrench near your gas shut off valve at all times and consider turning off the gas when you leave your residence for an extended period.

Give us a call at SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro and we will help you in the event that there is a fire or flood in your home. We are available 24 hours a day/7 days a week/365 days a year.

Mold experts

4/20/2018 (Permalink)

What's causing the mold to grow? It could be a leaky pipe, humid basement or a heavy rainstorm that flooded your entire first floor. The size of the problem is less important than your ability to repair the source of moisture. It’s imperative to stop further moisture intrusion, otherwise, the mold will just continue to grow and spread.

Mold growth in a basement, attic or crawl space is relatively common because residents don't see these areas often, and they can be very humid.

It’s not worth risking the potential health issues, and mold will simply continue to devalue your property until the problem becomes so rampant that the home is uninhabitable. Nobody wants to purchase a seller's mold issue. Attic mold almost never affects the indoor air quality in the living space, but it sure threatens real estate deals.

Regardless of whether you’re on the buying or selling end of the transaction, be sure you understand the laws about informing a purchasing party about home defects. The law in most states, generally, is that you have to disclose all known risks, which includes evidence of mold in the home. Providing the details of a previous inspection, mold lab test results or even simply stating that stains on a wall might be mold could be considered sufficient disclosure

Removing mold, correctly

4/19/2018 (Permalink)

When you discover mold in your home/building, call in the experts at SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro.

We can't even count how many jobs we have done because either internal maintenance crews or even outside contractors didn't know how to properly handle mold removal.

Once proper containment is in place and control of the air is maintained, mold can be addressed. If carpet, drywall, wallpaper and insulation has mold growing on it, it’s  going to need to be removed. The affected material is removed from its location and is then properly bagged.

Those bags need to be properly handled to ensure that mold is not carried out of the containment area and allowed to spread into the air and onto other unaffected materials.

Once all mold affected material has been removed, all of the surrounding areas can be cleaned and HEPA vacuumed to ensure all of the mold spores have been removed.

Storms

4/16/2018 (Permalink)

When a strong thunderstorm passes through any area, the potential for storm damage can range from very minimal to leaving behind significant amounts of damage in homes and anything that gets in its path. In fact, it is not uncommon for a storm to take off the roof of a home in seconds or to flood the house with water. In some situations, the homeowner may not be able to do anything to prepare for the devastation that it does, especially when there is little warning in advance. This is also why so many weather stations are often focused on telling the people in their immediate and surrounding areas what is going on before the storm hits the areas.

Removing all of the water from a home after a storm is not as simple as some people think. In fact, these jobs should only be done by professionals who have the expertise to complete the job by using the most innovative equipment in the industry. So, for those of you who have storm damage that has affected your home, you can contact at SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro  technicians for assistance at 513-422-9200 today.

Sprinkler head burst in school

These sudden emergencies require an expert to begin the remediation process. SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro has performed services on several commercial losses. Storm/water damage

4/12/2018 (Permalink)

Flood damage is a water event that requires professional help. A bucket and mop or shop vacuum are not up to the challenge. The sheer amount of water quickly overwhelms any do it yourself attempt. The experienced technicians from SERVPRO employ powerful, industrial strength pumps and extractors to evacuate the water fast. Speed is critical because of the progressive nature of water damage.

Many structures, items, and surfaces can emerge nearly good as new if water does not have the chance to soak into and begin the process of disintegration. Although building materials like finished wood, concrete or cinder block may be able to shed water without much change, drywall, insulation, ceiling tiles, carpeting, and other porous components risk swelling, crumbling, and delamination if soaked for any period of time.

SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro employees learn dozens of targeted strategies to quickly and successfully remove water from you place of business or home. Once the obvious water is gone, the crew uses high-efficiency fans and dehumidifiers to complete the job, drawing residual moisture out of contents and structure.

Fire

4/11/2018 (Permalink)

A fire damage that was started in a kitchen.

Despite the specialized fire prevention and detection systems that we have in our buildings, fire damage remains a top concern. It is also worth noting that different challenges arise from different fire situations. While we expect to remove the dirt that smoke residues leave behind, there are several processes that restorers perform to retur your Middeltown Springboro home to its former state, and all that requires specific equipment and skills.

You need to treat all fire damage events in Middeltown Springboro as an emergency to prevent further damage. When our SERVPRO team arrives at your property, we perform a pretest and identify items we can replace, clean, and those that need further examination. From our inspection, it is possible to determine the scope of the loss and share with the adjuster, and after that schedule the estimated mitigation processes.

When water comes into contact with some smoke particles, odors may result. Where possible, our SERVPRO technicians remove the odor source and perform deodorization. When the smells are coming from cracks, we direct deodorizing fog or smoke into those spaces by using thermal foggers.

At SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro , We're Faster To Any Size Disaster whether it is storm, mold, fire or water related. Call us at (513)422-9200 if you want your property to return to its preloss state.

Nobody wants mold.

Understandimg Mold

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

Mold is present about everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
Mold spores thrive on moisture and a food source, as in dust, insulation etc... Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation. Call SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro (513)422-9200.

Fire Safety

3/16/2016 (Permalink)

Every second counts during a fire. In a matter of moments a small flame can turn into a major fire, making it critical to be prepared by having an escape plan in place. The following are a few suggestions to help you develop an emergency escape plan for your family.

1.) Draw a map of each level of your home and show all doors and windows. Find two ways to get out of each room. Make sure all doors and windows that lead outside open easily.

2.) Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second and third floor. Only purchase collapsible escape ladders evaluated by a recognized testing laboratory. Store them near the window where they will be used.

3.) Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.

4.) Teach your children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them.

5.) Plan for everyone in your home with special consideration for elderly or disabled individuals.

6.) Practice your fire escape plan at night and during the daytime.

3/16/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro is always here to help and we want to make sure that everyone stays educated so that way we can find ways to avoid home disasters.

Here are some recent home fire facts to keep in mind when replacing smoke detectors and keeping our homes as safe as possible.

Having a working smoke alarm can cut the risk of home fire deaths in half.
It's important to know the difference between hardwired and battery powered smoke detectors. Hardwired alarms operate 90% of the time and battery powered ones only work 84% of the time. Which is a pretty decent difference when it comes to a home fire.
According to a National Fire Prevention Week survey only 1/3 of Americans have both developed and practiced a home fire escape plan.
It is important to have a plan in motion. If you need help developing a fire escape plan SERVPRO would gladly help you along.

WINTER SAFETY: PROTECT YOUR HOME IN FRIGID TEMPS

Preventing and Thawing Frozen Pipes.

Being prepared and informed may help you to avoid the messy and often expensive issue of frozen pipes. The American Red Cross provides information and suggestions around how to prevent water pipes in the home from freezing, and how to thaw them if they do freeze.

Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem.

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the "strength" of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.

Preventing Frozen Pipes.

Before the onset of cold weather, prevent freezing of these water supply lines and pipes by following these recommendations:

* Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.

* Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.

* Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the basement, crawl space, attic, garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.

* Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.

During Cold Weather, Take Preventative Action.

* Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

* Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.

* When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.

* Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.

* If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

To Thaw Frozen Pipes:

* If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.

* Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.

* Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.

* Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.

* Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.

Understanding Mold

2/23/2016 (Permalink)

It does not take much to survive because it feeds off of cellulose material found in products that are wood-based.

Understanding Mold

Microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, so removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and they may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Let your nose lead the way. Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher than normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
